Out-of-State Learning

State Authorization

State authorization allows SLCC to offer online programs nationwide. Utah is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), and SLCC is an approved SARA institution. SARA establishes a set of standards for offering online programs in member states and territories. SARA also protects distance-learning students and provides students with a method for filing complaints. 49 states and Puerto Rico have joined SARA.

If you are a student living outside of Utah while you attend SLCC, you can enroll in online classes through Salt Lake Community College.

California

California is the only state that has not yet joined SARA. As an out-of-state public institution, Salt Lake Community College is not under the purview of the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, thus Bureau approval for SLCC Online to offer its programs to residents of California is not required. Therefore, SLCC is in compliance with California regulations concerning postsecondary distance education.

Other Territories

Puerto Rico and 49 states have all joined SARA. If you live in any other US territory, please contact the state authorization coordinator. We will do our best to seek authorization and program approval, rather than deny a student access to SLCC distance learning opportunities based on a student’s location.

International Enrollments

It is possible for students to complete SLCC’s online classes and degrees from other countries. It is the student’s responsibility to understand requirements about whether an online degree will be recognized in the student’s home country. Some countries do not formally recognize online degrees, which may have implications for students who wish to continue their education at other institutions or seek specific employment credentials. Some countries also require the student to pay taxes in addition to the price of tuition.

US military students stationed abroad are able to enroll in online classes through SLCC. Please contact SLCC’s Veterans Services for information and support.

All other students, please contact the state authorization coordinator for specific questions about enrolling in SLCC online classes and degrees while living abroad.
