Responsibilities:

Brenda Santoyo is an SLCC alumnus and the College has been a home away from home for her for several years now. She recently completed her M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy with an emphasis in Student Affairs at the University of Utah. As a daughter of Mexican undocumented immigrants, she has always strived to serve the individual needs of her beloved community. Brenda’s drive and passion for the field stem from her background in serving undocumented students initially enrolled in the Bridge to Success and Bruin Scholars programs through the office for Orientation & Student Success. In her time at the College, she has played a role in launching the Bruin Dreams scholarship program, maintaining the Undocumented Student Ally Training, upholding the charge of the Undocumented Student Resource Committee, and managing SLCC’s Dream Center, the second in the state of Utah, now as the inaugural coordinator.

Responsibilities:

Edgar Guzman is a first-generation college student, who grew up in the west side of the Salt Lake Valley and was born in Michoacán, Mexico. He graduated from West High School and is now working on his Associates of Pre-Engineering (APE) with the intention of transferring to the University of Utah to pursue a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. Having completed middle school and two years of high school in Mexico, he excels in Spanish and English. Edgar is honored to work with immigrant students like himself in obtaining a higher education. As a single parent he understands the challenges of time management between work, family, and student life and has a deep respect for immigrant parents who aspire for post-secondary education. Edgar is an avid reader of science, technology, history, anthropology, paleontology, and science-fiction. Some of his favorite novels include Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Congo, The Time Machine, Dune and 1984. In his free time, Edgar enjoys snowboarding with his daughter D'azia.

Responsibilities:

Yared Nevarez is an international student pursuing a degree in Software Engineering. His first step in this journey started at Salt Lake Community College about a year ago. He plans to transfer to Utah Valley University next year. As a first-generation student, Yared is aware of the difficulties immigrants experience as they attempt to access and navigate higher education. He is excited to work with and support his community. Overall, Yared is honored to help students through their college experience.

Responsibilities:

Emily Alarcon-Patricio is a first-generation student who is currently studying at SLCC to receive a Humanities degree. As a member of a mixed-status family, she always strives to take advantage of new opportunities to establish the better life that her family always wanted for her. Having to face navigating college alone as a first-generation student, she has learned much about the services and resources offered at the College. Emily is grateful to be serving students who live through that experience by helping them navigate their journey at SLCC while also gaining a better understanding of the community she is a part of.

Estefania "Stef" Zavala

Estefania "Stef" Zavala

Writing & Rhetoric Fellow

Responsibilities:

Estefania (Stef) is a first-generation student, DACA recipient, and an SLCC alumnus. She is currently studying at the University of Utah, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Writing and Rhetoric Studies. Stef is a daughter of two immigrant parents who had high hopes that their children would receive a higher quality education and live a better life. She is honored and proud to be serving and working with students like herself on their journey through higher education. As a parent, professional, and student, she understands the many obstacles her peers face on a regular basis. She has a 3-year-old son, Leo, who has become her biggest motivation and she enjoys reading autobiographies.

Stef is the Dream Center'’'s Writing & Rhetoric Fellow. Stef serves Dream Center students at Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah, and at Utah high schools. She can help you proofread your written documents, like personal statements for scholarship applications, resumes, cover letters, and assignments in your classes.
